Update on Off-Site Source Recovery Program (OSRP)
The mission of GTRI/OSRP is to recover excess, unwanted, abandoned, or orphan radioactive sealed sources that pose a potential risk to national security. To date, the project has recovered over 27,000 sources (over 800,000 Ci decayed). For several years, the two main obstacles to disposition of disused sources have been (1)limited availability of Type B containers and, (2)lack of access to commercial disposal. This presentation will discuss ongoing work to address those issues as well as provide information on what to expect when registering disused and unwanted sources. The presentation will also provide a status summary of the Source Collection and Threat Reduction Project managed by the Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors and its ongoing evolution.
